Though born in New Jersey and raised in DC, Bill has lived, studied and worked all over the world. His undergraduate work was done in New Orleans at Tulane University. While there, Bill studied Japanese Management and took a semester at Sophia University in Tokyo. After working in Marketing Research for several years back in DC, he took advantage of an opportunity to work in South Korea for an economic think-tank. During his time in Seoul, Bill applied and got accepted to Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix, AZ. At Thunderbird,he took a semester to study in both Beijing and Shanghai and graduated with an MBA and a good grasp of Mandarin Chinese.Upon graduation from Thunderbird, Bill worked in both Los Angeles and Phoenix for several vitamin and supplement companies and successfully repackaged, rebranded and introduced new items. When he had the opportunity to get some major CPG experience with Unilever Ice Cream in Green Bay, WI, he decided to take it. There he became fluent in Brand Management techniques and managed the P&L for Breyers, a $500 million brand. Before starting his entrepreneurial career, and after a final stint with Bay Valley Foods in Green Bay and Rana Meal Solutions in Oak Brook IL, he decided to move to Charleston, South Carolina to be closer to his aging parents. While there, Bill successfully started a kid’s music education franchise called songs for seeds and sold it after three years for a profit. After a storied career in business, Bill decided to begin “paying it forward”. He is now a teacher of Personal Finance at Lucy Beckham High School, the first high school in the district to make it a graduation requirement. Mr. Joy has also been an advocate for making Personal Finance a required class in the state of South Carolina. His editorial in Columbia's The State newspaper may have had some influence, as soon after, South Carolina signed this bill into a law. His column also set off a flurry of local news segments in which he represented Lucy Beckham High School with great pride. His various certifications and professional growth in the area of personal finance has led Next Generation Personal Finance to name him a "Distinguished Educator" which only 1% of NGPF members achieve. Mr. Joy also sits on the state standards committee for the new required Personal Finance course and is working with CCSD’s Career and Technology Education department to incorporate employability soft-skills into the district's offering.
